There is Hope

I want you to know that there is hope!

If you are like most abuse victims you have lived with an incredible amount of emotional pain for most of your life and have thought “it will never change. I just have to get used to the fact that this is how my life will be.” You may feel that you somehow deserve to live in horrible emotional pain.

I am here to tell you this:

That is not true! There is hope that you can get better. There is hope that you will feel better! There is hope that you can live your life without all the emotional pain.

How do I know this? Because it happened to me. I thought that I would always have to live my life with the emotional pain of depression and a feeling that my very existence was wrong. I tried to help myself. I went to Bible studies. I memorized Bible verses. I “understood” and “believed” that God loved me and that Jesus died for my sins, but that didn’t help me.

Why not?

I know that it sounds like heresy to say that knowing the Bible didn’t help me get rid of the pain. Allow me to explain. I truly believe that the Bible is the word of God. I believe Jesus is the son of God. The problem was that all of my beliefs were intellectual. I believed in my mind, but it did not impact my soul. The Bible states:
You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.” (James 2:19). Did you catch that? The demons believe that God exists. They believe that Jesus is God’s son. If knowledge of the truth is enough to change and heal you, then why aren’t the demons changed by their belief. They “know” the truth, yet they still seek to destroy what God has created.

In order to be truly changed the truth of God’s word has to get deep into your spirit and soul. It is not enough to have “head” knowledge of God’s truth. You must also know that truth deep within your being. The problem occurs because abuse victims have placed so many walls of protection to keep everything at a great distance from their souls.
