What to do if You Just Learned Your Son was Sexually Abused

What is Male Sexual Abuse?
I just found out my son has been abused...

What Should I Do Now?

Although you may feel very strong emotions (shock, anger, the desire for revenge, and even guilt for "not stopping it"), the most important thing to do is REMAIN CALM.

This is important because your son needs to see that you are in control. Also, any anger that you may feel will be felt by your child. Abused boys already feel an incredible amount of shame and your son may feel that you are angry with him for what happened. It is important to tell your son that it is not his fault and you are proud of him for telling the truth.

If possible, try to find out the following without making the child feel like he is being questioned or making him feel like he did something wrong:

Who was the abuser?

Is the boy in any immediate danger?

Does anyone else in the boy's family know?

If yes, they may be protecting the abuser out of fear.

What does the boy think will happen to him for telling? Many abusers will tell their victims that something bad will happen if they ever tell anyone.

For example, "God will not love you anymore if you tell" or "Something bad will happen to you if you ever tell anyone about our 'secret'". Sometimes children can even feel that their life may be in danger if they tell.

Try to find out what the child thinks will happen next. This will help you determine the possible danger to the boy.

If you suspect that the child may be in immediate danger, it is important to call the police or child protective services.
